PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A shooting in Portsmouth Saturday night left a one-year-old boy dead and a woman wounded.
According to Detective Misty Holley with Portsmouth Police, officers responded to the 1500 block of Maple Avenue around 9:28 p.m. after receiving a report that a one-year-old boy had been shot. A short time later police received a second call saying that a woman had also been shot.
When officers arrived at the home on Maple Avenue they found one-year-old Dion Lofton Jr. with a gunshot wound to the head and a woman who was shot in the back. Medics took the child and the woman to a local hospital where the boy died. The woman is expected to survive, according to Detective Holley.
Detectives arrested Anthony D. Holley and Jerry Atkinson of Portsmouth and charged them with first degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, attempted robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Both are in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s office.
