HANOVER, Va. (WRIC) — A Hanover County Deputy was killed in an off-duty vehicle crash on Sunday, June 7 in Middlesex County.

Mark “Alex” Moore was a passenger in a vehicle when it ran off the road and hit some trees.

The driver was injured, but the extent of injuries is unknown at this time.

Moore graduated from Hanover High School in 2009 and graduated from James Madison University in 2013. He started his career with the Hanover Sheriff’s Office on January 1 and would of graduated from the academy on Friday, June 19.

Moore’s parents, Mark and Lynne released the following statement Tuedsay afternoon:

Our family is stunned and deeply saddened by the loss of our son and brother, Alex Moore. We are comforted in knowing that he is in Heaven and that we will see him again.

Alex was an extraordinary young man – mature beyond his 24 years. In 2007, at age 15, he saved his father’s life by performing CPR until first responders arrived at our house following a heart attack.

Pursuing his calling for a career in law enforcement, Alex joined the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in January of this year. He was due to complete the Sheriff’s Academy in two weeks. He was beaming with pride at the thought and we were so proud of him.

Alex was a friend to many and loved in return by a great group of kids. His fondest memories are of those spent with his friends and family. Those memories are what we cherish now.

Our sincere thanks go out to our friends in the community, to Alex’s friends, to the Hanover Sheriff’s Office and to Cool Spring Baptist Church for all of the care, loving and assistance that is being bestowed on us in this time of need.

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. Please also remember to pray for his friend who was injured in the accident.
