RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham announced Monday that two men have been arrested in connection to the shooting death of 12-year-old Amiya Moses. Dwight Q. Jackson and Shaquille D. Maxwell, both 20, were taken into custody Sunday night by the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force.
“This senseless violence has to stop.” — Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.
According to police, they have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Moses was shot on the 4900 block of Old Brook Road around 9:30 Saturday night. Durham said that detectives and officers worked around the clock to find out who caused the shooting.
Police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two suspects. He credited tipsters and family members for providing the needed info to make the arrest.
“This is one of my first times being the chief of police where we had family members actually coax their loved ones to turn themselves in,” he explained. “And that’s the right thing to do. I said it yesterday at the press conference, if you have information I don’t care if it’s a family or friend or somebody committing a murder, and you don’t give that information up or provide that information to the to the chief, you’re just as guilty as the person who pulled the trigger. I think that’s very important and that’s a strong statement that I have to make.”
Durham also said that this senseless killing could have been prevented if people just learn to say sorry.
“This senseless violence has to stop,” Durham explained.
He also stressed that the incidences of violence throughout the city require not just police work.
“It can’t only be the police department,” he said. We can’t be the cure-all. We can’t do it alone.
“If you know something, say something. Our gang is bigger than their gang.”
Three people total were murdered in a 24-hour span this weekend this past weekend. Officials say it’s the deadliest weekend in Richmond since august.
And police are still following up on leads so they can arrest the people responsible for the other homicides.
