RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A little boy was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after he was hit by an SUV in a South Richmond neighborhood.
It happened at the 2900 block of Caulder Court, that’s right at the Holly Springs Avenue intersection.
“I knew sooner or later it was going to happen because they run backwards and forward in our streets,” said Felicia Cousins, a resident.
Residents say the 8-year-old boy was attempting to cross the street when an SUV approached him. The boy hesitated but then ran on the street, and that’s when he got struck. Police say he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver is not facing any charges.
Residents say this isn’t the first time this has happened in their neighborhood. They say the street can be dangerous because there are always kids playing close to the street, and many drivers speed around.
“Because the traffic comes around the circle a lot of times people are going really fast,” said resident Patricia Hampton.
They all do it, even my grandbaby. They run out there in the street you know trying to get across to the park, because like I said, this is where they play at. Their play area is this little circle,” said Cousins.
Cousins is worried it could happen to another child and be much worse. She and others want to get some signs on the road warning drivers to slow down and be on the lookout.
“Children playing or so speed signs,” said Cousins.
But they also say it’s the parent’s responsibility to make sure their kids are safe, and know to pay attention to the cars.
“My grandma just told my other grandson to be careful playing out here,” said Hampton.
“Just let the parents know… make sure their kids are watching the cars, look both ways and pay attention when they’re crossing the street,” said Cousins.
