(KRON) — Former Oakland A’s outfielder Dave Henderson died at the age of 57 on Sunday morning.
Henderson received a kidney transplant one month ago. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Henderson played 14 seasons in the major leagues, including stops with the San Francisco Giants in 1987 and the A’s from 1988-1993. He was an All-Star in 1991 and was a part of the 1989 A’s World Series team that swept the Giants.
The Oakland A’s issued a statement Sunday morning expressing their sadness about the passing of their beloved outfielder they affectionally called “Hendu.”
“Henderson was an instrumental part of the A’s 1989 World Series Championship club and an even more impactful member of the A’s family and community. Hendu and his smile will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family,” the team said.
Rap star MC Hammer, an East Bay native who in his youth worked as a batboy for the A’s, posted condolences along with an image of Henderson’s trading card.
“Dave Henderson was a classy, joyful guy. Played the game the right way. He’s going to be missed. RIP,” Hammer said in a tweet.
