NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Williamsburg man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 east in New Kent County on Wednesday morning.
Police say officers were called to the crash on I-64 eastbound near Providence Forge at mile marker 214 around 5:19 a.m.
Police investigation indicates that a black 2006 Honda Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed, when it changed lanes from the right lane to the left, then back to the right lane, striking a Freightliner tractor trailer in the rear wedging the vehicle under the trailer of the tractor trailer.
The driver of the tractor trailer thought he blew a tire and pulled over, not realizing he had been hit. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
The driver of the 2006 Honda Civic, 27-year-old Charles E.S. Garrett, of Williamsburg, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Police say speed is being considered a factor in the crash.
All lanes of I-64 east have since reopened.
