RICHMOND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Mechanicsville man was killed in a hunting accident in Richmond County over the weekend.

According to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, 60-year-old Keith Williams was shot in the torso and pelvic area around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Williams was airlifted to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.

Officials say that Williams was with an organized hunting party of about 45 to 50 people. The hunters were driving dogs and Williams was at the front of the drive. When the shooter saw movement, he believed it be game, and discharged one round of buckshot from a 12-gauge shotgun. Both the victim and the shooter were wearing blaze orange.

The shooter, 45-year-old Wavely Veney was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, hunting without the proper licenses, violation of a protective order, reckless handling of a firearm and attempting to take deer unlawfully.

Veney is currently being held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail without bond.
