CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A suspect wanted in connection to a shooting incident in Petersburg eluded authorities following a pursuit and standoff in Chesterfield County Wednesday afternoon.
Chesterfield police tell us they engaged in a foot pursuit with 26-year-old Christopher John Jones, who is wanted in Petersburg for four counts of attempted malicious wounding, at 1:20 p.m. The suspect was chased into a neighborhood where he was last seen entering a residence in the 20200 block of Gandy Avenue. Additional police resources, including SWAT and Negotiations teams, were called to the home after officers were unable to make contact with the subject.
“There were tons of police cars and SWAT vehicles and another bigger vehicle, and long guns and what looked like lots of fire power,” said Sandra Morton, who lives next to the home where the standoff occurred.
After a roughly six-hour long standoff, the suspect was nowhere to be found when authorities cleared the house at 7:40 p.m. An official said the suspect could have escaped through a window, but it is unknown at this time how he managed to get away.
Neighbors expressed anguish over the entire ordeal.
“We don’t want anything to escalate and endanger children in the neighborhood,” said Jeffrey Walker, who lives in the area.
Jones’ Aunt, Kim Long, who was later seen cleaning up the home after the search, told reporters she did not know Jones’ location after leaving the home. Long also said her elderly mother lives in the home where the standoff occurred.
Jones is described as a 5-foot-8, 165-pound black male with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing all black clothing.
