5 dead after fire in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Five people are dead after a house fire on the 3400 block Wicklow Lane in Chesterfield County.

The fire started around 3:15 a.m. Fire crews found heavy smoke coming from the garage and the house crews were able to go inside and get several people out. One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and four others got out safely.

Four people were pronounced dead at the scene while the fifth was pronounced dead at VCU Medical Center. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with minor burn injuries. A police officer was also taken to the hospital to have a laceration treated.

According to one of the survivors, the fire started in the garage. He says that a one-year-old boy, three-year-old girl and three adults were killed. Two other family members were taken to the hospital.

The house suffered significant fire damage. The Red Cross will be assisting the family members that are displaced. Chesterfield County Fire Marshals and Police Department are on scene investigating the cause of the fire.
