NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Martin Luther King III spoke at Clark Memorial United Methodist Church in Nashville Sunday, two days after what would have been his father’s 87th birthday.

King was in Nashville to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
He spoke to the congregation about his father’s legacy.
“My father and mother dedicated their lives to what my father would have called the eradication of the triple evils in our society. Dad defined them as poverty, racism, militarism and violence.”
He also spoke about the 2016 presidential race and Donald Trump’s suggestion to ban Muslims from entering the United States. “The way is not to target all Muslims. That’s just totally the most un-American thing I’ve ever heard of.”
King talked about his father’s peaceful protests. “If my dad and his team had taken out guns and tried to shoot everybody that was against what they were doing, which was a significant part of the population at that time, where would they have gotten? They would have been killed immediately.”

Ludye Wallace, President of the Nashville Chapter of the N.A.A.C.P., listened to King speak.
Wallace said, “It’s an honor and a blessing. We can hear the story and we can go back in history and know all the things about Martin Luther King, Jr., but now to have his son in person, in real life… telling the story and reminding us of a commitment we should all be making to make some effort to do something to help make America, Tennessee, the world, a better place to live. And we probably need to do that now more than ever.”
King spoke at three other Nashville churches on Sunday. On Monday, he is scheduled to speak at the Music City Center in downtown Nashville.
