CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Columbia Gas of Virginia is responding to an outage in the Eagle Cove Subdivision in Chesterfield County
The outage is a result of low pressure experienced in the system serving this community early this morning, Columbia says. The company is working to restore service to the 199 residential customers affected.
Columbia says that technicians must go door-to-door to shut off the meter at each home affected, complete repairs and restore pressure to the system. After, technicians will go door-to-door again, this time restoring service customer-by-customer.
“We must get inside and have clear access to perform a safety check of your gas appliances. Please do not attempt to restore the service on your own,” Columbia Gas said in a news release.
Columbia Gas advises any person smelling natural gas (similar to rotten eggs) to take the following safety steps:
- If you smell the odor of natural gas inside, please leave immediately.
- Call 911 and Columbia Gas at 800-544-5606 from a safe location.
- Stay there until a gas company representative arrives, or leave a note on your door stating the location where you can be reached.
- If an appliance is out, do not attempt to re-light it -whether or not you smell the odor of gas. Columbia Gas representatives will restore service to your appliances.
- If you detect natural gas, do not use matches, electric switches or any kinds of appliances or motorized tools.
