ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WRIC) — Two Northern Virginia men arrested on terrorism charges Friday will appear in federal court today in Alexandria.
28-year-old Joseph Hassan Farrokh and his friend, 25-year-old Mahmoud Amin Mohamed Elhassan could both be facing a maximum of 20 years in prison if they are convicted on these terrorism charges.
The two were arrested at Richmond International Airport on Friday, January 15.
Farrokh, a U.S. citizen originally from Pennsylvania, was taken into custody for allegedly attempting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group. He has been charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Authorities say Elhassan, a legal permanent U.S. resident originally from Sudan, drove Farrokh to Richmond. He has been charged with helping Farrokh.
Both men are from Woodbridge, Virginia.
