RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The man accused for a high speed crash in Richmond that killed an award-winning author has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Robert Gentil pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in court Tuesday. The court accepted the plea.
Gentil was taken from court to the state mental hospital, where he will undergo a mental evaluation. Officials will then decide if Gentil should be committed to the hospital or released.
Police say Gentil was driving 100 miles per hour when he collided with Elizabeth Pryor’s vehicle back in April 2015.
Pryor’s sister was in court Tuesday. She told 8News reporter Kristin Smith that “this is case where there are clearly no winners.”

Gentil’s attorney said that his client is mentally ill and was manic at the time. Gentil had seen a doctor, but according to statements made in court, there was no indication something like this would happen. Lawyers said a toxicology report revealed that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system at time of crash.
