Wind chill makes for bitter cold; expect snow showers Wednesday evening

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Sunny skies will be over the region today and it will be very cold with highs only around 30.

Clear skies will be with us tonight and you can expect another very cold night with lows in the upper single digits to lower teens.

Wednesday will start off partly sunny but a weak weather system will approach the region in the afternoon and that will bring us more clouds with a chance snow showers during the evening and early part of the night.  Highs on Wednesday will top out only in the middle 30s.

That system will be off the east coast on Thursday and partly sunny skies will be with us with highs near 40. But during Thursday, our winter storm will begin to take shape over Arkansas and the Gulf Coast states. This will be the primary storm which will slide into the Tennessee Valley. From that system a new storm will form near coastal Georgia-South Carolina. From that point our two long range models slide that new coastal system along or just inside North Carolina and then off the coast of Virginia Beach to the DelMarVa. As this system moves up along the coast it will rapidly strengthen, increasing our north to northeast winds and therefore keeping the cold air locked over central Virginia. Both of those models try to sneak in some warmer air higher in the atmosphere to force a mix with sleet in areas south and east of Richmond, and the GFS tries to bring a change to rain for some of those areas especially the Tide Water. This thought of rain by the GFS is difficult to believe, because of the dynamic strengthening of this coastal system. This will be the tricky part of the forecast.

Any mixture will transition back to snow Friday night and last into early Saturday, before moving out.

Mostly cloudy skies will be around on Saturday afternoon and Sunday will be sunny with highs near 40.
