RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — City maintenance crews were spotted cleaning up the monument dedicated to Richmond tennis legend Arthur Ashe less than a day after former Governor Doug Wilder called out Mayor Dwight Jones and the City of Richmond on Thursday for the statue’s condition.
Former Governor Doug Wilder fired off several tweets Thursday criticizing city maintenance because weeds and grass around the monument had become overgrown in recent months.
Neighbors in the area told 8News that they agree with Wilder’s stance.
One local resident said, “The city needs to take ownership of the monuments.”
