CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — This snow storm could not have come at a worse time for Boulevard Flower Gardens, which is known for giving back to its community and has been a staple here for decades.”Right at 60 years now,” said owner Mark Landa.
“Right at 60 years now,” said owner Mark Landa.
This past Friday, during the brunt of the storm, Mark Landa ventured to his greenhouses at Boulevard Flowers to find two of them in shambles.
“We saw that it was kind of not in the same shape, we were anticipating seeing so we knew something was wrong,” said Landa.
The two greenhouses collapsed under the weight of the snow and ice that had piled on top causing thousands of dollars in damage. But, the money is just one part of the larger problem.
“It’s not just the monetary part of the greenhouse, it’s that we are getting so close to preparing to plant everything for spring, this particular house was used for greenhouse tomatoes, which were supposed to be moved into this coming week,” said Landa.
Landa’s daughter, Casey Landa, who also takes pride in her family business, turned to crowdfunding to solicit not just money, but help that right now is in short supply.
“We also would love to have volunteers, just anything. We’re really low on staff this time of year so this is just a slow season, but anything anybody can do we really appreciate it,” Casey said.
Now, with spring right around the corner and tomatoes with no home, the Landa family is hoping the rest of the winter is a quiet one.
“It’s definitely going to put us behind, the question is what are we going to do with them,” M. Landa said. “This house was equipped with all the lines to hang them with all of these grow on strings upward.”
