CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Our newsroom flooded with calls Wednesday night from upset parents, worried that area roads will be too dangerous for buses and students even after Chesterfield County Schools announced that they will operate under a two-hour delay on Thursday.
Wanting their voices heard, a petition was created that has drawn more than 700 signatures.
The petitioners argue that the focus at all times should be keeping kids safe and that having them come to school puts their safety in jeopardy. Others wrote that their roads are not fit enough for kids to return.
Students who drive to school also signed, saying they’re afraid to drive in potentially icy conditions. Parents also agree, saying having newly licensed teens on the road is not acceptable.
We reached out to Chesterfield County Schools for their thoughts on the petition, but we have yet to hear anything back.
The petition is growing by the minute, but for now, county schools will open two hours late.
