CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Reaching the pinnacle of your sport somehow never sinks in automatically, put a ring on your finger and the feeling hits you like chin music. Seven months after defeating Vanderbilt in the College World Series, the Virginia Cavaliers’ baseball program received their national championship rings.
The national title is the first in the program’s history and has been celebrated appropriately, culminating in Saturday night’s “Step Up to the Plate” event at John Paul Jones Arena.
Members of last year’s team were honored for winning the 2015 national championship. Head coach Brian O’Connor the presented the title rings to his players, thanking each of them for their hard work, sacrifice and achievement.
The program also received an honorary plaque that will hang at the Davenport field to recognize the achievement of last season’s group of student athletes, starting this season.
