MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — It’s been over two years since Margaret “Meg” Menzies, a Hanover mother of three, died when she was struck by a drunk driver while jogging along Route 54 in Hanover County.

Meg’s mother, Pam Cross, is now working to get a specialty license plates bill passed in the General Assembly for Virginia motorists. The plate features a silhouette of Meg jogging.

“She was a Christian mom, an elite runner, she loved her community, she loved her church, she loved her family; she always tried to do what was right,” Cross said. “She loved helping and serving, she was just a normal ordinary girl.Cross wants the plate to encourage people to be kind, encourage others, and simply be the best they could be.

Organizers behind the license plate drive said they need at least 450 people to pre-order the license plate to get it through the General Assembly.

“Eventually, once we sell over 1000 license plates, it goes into a profit share program and a portion of those proceeds will go into a foundation that will be set up in Meg’s honor to have scholarships in her honor to help churches to help mothers of preschool groups,” said Ryan Hudson, who is helping to organize the drive.

Cross also hopes the license plate will remind others to remember to share the roads.

“That’s my hope, that no one would go through this and that people would wake up before they go out and drive and that people would be aware that the roads are for everybody and to share them,” Cross said.

Organizers are hoping to reach their deadline by February 1. If the bill passes, people can show their support for the cause on their vehicles after July 1. People interested in pre-ordering the plate can email mamawirt@comcast.net.
