RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Throughout the summer many will go boating on the water, but it can be dangerous if you’re not safe.
Virginia had 61 boating incidents last year and 16 deaths.
On Saturday, 8News guest Flotilla Commander Eric Perkins gave some tips on how to have fun and be safe at the same time while boating.
Below is a list of safety tips for boating:
- Everyone on the boat should wear a life jacket. It is a requited for all children under age 13 and for all JetSki users.
- You should take boater training before getting out on the water. All boaters under age 50 must pass the Virginia Boating Safety Education course to operate a vessel.
- Make sure to have a vessel safety exam. This will make sure your boat meets federal and state safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help.
