RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Some Richmond neighbors have their own special Fourth of July celebration this weekend in the Fan.
Cathy Harbert was a teenager when neighbors held the first block party on West Franklin Street.
“It’s just something to look forward to every year,” she said Friday evening.
“They were tearing a front porch off 44 years ago, and they brought out some food and some beverages, and they started this block party, and it’s been continuing ever since,” said resident and former “block Mayor” Rob Baumgardner.
Today, residents on the 3300 block go all out—with artsy decorations, fancy seating and fun outfits!
“We invite friends to come and join us for cooking out, and listening to music and play crazy funny games like turkey bowling with really live frozen turkey breasts and bowling pins,” said Harbert.
This is the first year they’ve had a live band and a fun “British Invasion” theme after a couple from England moved to the block.
“We get barbecue and a lot of friends and family to come out and visit the block, we have a parade, it’s Americana out here, everyone has a fantastic time” said Baumgardner.
Especially the little ones.
“They get the street closed starting late the night of the 2nd, and we do a movie on the street, and you know the parade. Just riding your bike in the street, being able to draw in the street, being able to play with your friends in the street,” said resident Eileen Lapington.
It’s a tradition residents hope to keep for years to come.
“Chillin’ and relaxing and living in the moment, and catching up with old friends and seeing neighbors that you sometimes don’t see all the time,” said Harbert.
Neighbors will continue to celebrate on Saturday, and the street will be back open Saturday night.
