RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) – The rain didn’t put a damper on one of Richmond’s biggest Fourth of July celebration Saturday. Thousands of people came out to see the fireworks at Dogwood Dell.
Resident Chris Watson has been coming to the event for almost four decades.
“I keep coming back because I love the music, I love to people watch, the fireworks, the carillon and everything about it,” she said.
Watson says not much has changed throughout the years.
Carillon Parks brings thousands of families and residents for the music, food, games and of course, the fireworks show.
“They have an orchestra and the fireworks which all sync to the music, so it’s really awesome,” said Ben Keebler.
“This is a great place to come on the Fourth of July. You get to see a little bit of everybody, see friends, just a nice atmosphere,” said Doug Watson.
The show was almost canceled due to a storm that passed through Central Virginia earlier. Luckily, it hit early enough, so the crowd waited for the rain to pass.
“It came down pretty heavily early on, it was quite cold!” said Steve Duncanson, who was visiting from New York.
“We’re damp but we’re not soaking wet, so it’s good,” said Chris Watson.
Several spectators shared with 8News reporter Claudia Rupcich what Fourth of July means to them:
“It means happy birthday America,” said Brendon Roark.
“It means freedom,” said Doug Watson.
“Recognizing, it’s an adage but it’s absolutely true, that freedom isn’t free that someone had to pay a prize,” said Duncanson.
“The Fourth of July is always a special day to celebrate our independence and living in this country, that with its faults is still the best country in the world,” said Chris Watson.
