CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — The NAACP is backing a woman who was arrested for trespassing at Meadowbrook High School in Chesterfield.

Police say Kandise Lucas had been banned from the school, but she says that wasn’t the case.

The NAACP says they’re not accusing Chesterfield Police or the school system of any racial misconduct against Lucas. However, the organization says she was there that day to be an advocate for minority students — and that’s why they’re standing with her.

This issue goes back several months to April when cell phone video shows Lucas in handcuffs accused of trespassing. Police say they were told Lucas had been banned from the school.

“I was invited, I was invited by the parent and by the IEP team administration to be there to come to the table and talk about what was best for that child,” said Lucas.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Lucas’ lawyer said officials banned her from the school four years ago after the allegedly recorded meetings about individual education plans for special needs students. Her lawyer also told the paper she declined to give copies of the recordings to the school system.

The Virginia State Conference for the NAACP says they want to support Lucas as an advocate for families whose civil rights have been violated by school administrators.

8News reached out to the Chesterfield County School System and was told that the school division respectfully declines to comment.

Lucas is scheduled to appear in court today, but there’s a chance it won’t happen. Her attorney says the case could be continued so Lucas, the school system and the NAACP can all meet and work out an agreement together.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest proceedings. Stay with 8News for more on this developing story.
