The victim, 58-year-old Adel Shaanan, affectionately known as “Papi,” was shot twice — once in the chest and once in the side.
“He’s been to this neighborhood, like, a very honest man. A very giving, very nice guy, you know. Fair,” said Shareef Kahtaybh, a close friend.
Shaanan’s injuries were life threatening. 8News has learned that he’s also battling cancer and suffers from a heart condition.

Police say the suspect demanded money during the robbery attempt before shooting Shaanan and fleeing the store on foot.
Authorities are asking the public for help to find the man responsible.
“We’re reviewing video tape. We’re canvasing the area. We’re talking to witnesses and we’re asking for the community’s help,” Major Michael Shamus said.
Police are asking anyone who might know anything to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
