NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) – Newport News Shipbuilding has told workers to expect cost-cutting measures due to a drop in workload.
Media outlets report that Newport News Shipbuilding president Matt Mulherin sent a memo to employees last week informing them of the company’s plans to reduce spending. He didn’t provide details.
Newport News Shipbuilding spokeswoman Christie Miller told media outlets that she couldn’t provide further details.
Over the next 18 months, work on three aircraft carriers at the shipyard will be completed. The projects include defueling the USS Enterprise, overhauling the USS Abraham Lincoln and commissioning the Gerald R. Ford and delivering it to the Navy.
United Steelworkers Local 8888 president Arnold Outlaw says he hopes there won’t be layoffs.
