RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — New details are emerging about this year’s Redskins training camp. The NFL team returns to Richmond for the third straight year at the end of the month.
And 8News has learned there will be some changes for fans this go-round.
It’s almost that time of year again — in just over a week’s time — fans will flood the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center hoping to get a glimpse of their favorite Redskins players during training camp.
But this year, fans can expect some big changes. Among those will be changes to parking.
Parking will no longer be $7 — that has been increased to $10. In addition, parking will no longer be offered at the Diamond. Now fans can park at city controlled lots surrounding the training center.
Another change fans can expect to see is a decrease in the number of food trucks near the training camp. Last year, six vendors were allowed — this year the price for a vendor has dropped and only three trucks will be allowed.
The Richmond Economic Development Authority uses money garnered from the food vendors as well as parking to help cover its annual payment to the Redskins for holding their camp here in Richmond. But for the past two years, they have not been able to meet that financial burden.
Last year alone, the Economic Development Authority had to authorize another $258,000 to cover that payment shortfall. But one thing that will not change this year is that it will still be open to the public and free of charge.
“I just like watching the players and I love the stadium and I just like going,” said Tasnine Moye, a Redskins fan. “It’s going to be very tough, it’s going to cause a lot of confusion and I think that the Redskins fans, we all are Redskins fans and we love going to watch them but I think it’s going to be an issue.”
Moye says the changes might have an impact on who shows up to watch.
“It might, it might keep some, if not all, it might keep some fans away,” Moye said. “I’ll be there — I’ll be there in support.”
“I’ll be there, no matter what,” said fan Rich Williams.
