RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police ave identified the victim of Friday night’s shooting in Mosby Court as 26-year-old Davie L. Young of Hopewell.
At roughly 7:15 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Coalter and Redd streets for a report of an accident. While units were responding, addition 911 calls came in reporting a shooting in the same location.
Arriving officers found Young inside the crashed Chevy suburban suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to VCU Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
Also in the car was an adult female and two young children. Neither of those three occupants were injured.
Investigators say the incident began in the 1600 block of Gay Street where Young was reportedly involved in an altercation with several black males who began shooting at him. Young sought cover in his SUV, which he drove away in and then crashed a few blocks away.
A woman who lives near where the crash occurred told 8News reporter Matthew McClellan that she heard what sounded like firecrackers, and seconds later saw a car come down the street and leave the roadway. The neighbor said the adult female in the passenger seat exited the car and screamed, “my babies, my babies.”
The neighbor said she then ran towards the car and grabbed the two young children and brought them to safety.
