RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Thousands of neighborhoods around the nation are gearing up to celebrate the 32nd annual “National Night Out” Tuesday.
Hundreds of events are being held across Central Virginia. From Richmond to Chesterfield, Henrico and beyond, communities will come alive Tuesday night with cook-outs, ice-cream socials and even parades.
Attorney General Mark Herring and McGruff the Crime Dog will make appearances at several parties in Chesterfield County. Herring’s last stop will be at Bensley Park at 2900 Drewry’s Bluff Road at 6 p.m. Local police chiefs and sheriffs will also be making rounds in their respective communities, including Henrico Police Chief Doug Middleton, who will visit more than 70 neighborhoods Tuesday, with his department.
National Night Out is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve and encourage folks to band together to prevent crime in their neighborhoods. Last year more than 38 million people in over 16,000 communities participated in the event.
People in Richmond will also get to learn about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. Neighborhood Housing Services of Richmond, Inc. is sponsoring an education program and simulator at Pollard Park at 900 W Brookland Park Boulevard from 4-6 PM.
Most National Night Out events start around 4 Tuesday afternoon and run until 9:30 or 10 p.m.
