(WRIC) — On August 4 the state of Florida began recalling certain lots of tattoo inks from the Miami company A Thousand Virgins Corp. due to a microbial contamination.
The recall has been issued on their grey wash inks: G1, G2, and G3 with the label Lot #129 and the expiration date of 01/16 that showed to be contaminated with Mycobacterium chelonae, Microbacterium organisms, Cryptococcus albidus, and members of the Penicillium genus.
Using these products can cause bacterial infections and can lead to sepsis, “a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection” according to the report by the FDA.
The tattoo inks were made, sold, and distributed by A Thousand Virgins Tattoo Corp. The G1, G2, and, G3 grey wash tattoo inks are available for sale from both international and online distributors and have been distributed nationwide.
Currently, there is no specific laboratory evidence matching the microorganisms found in A Thousand Virgins tattoo inks to any recognized infection cases.
According to the report by the FDA, they themselves have found microbial contamination in the inks and have identified and isolated potentially pathogenic organisms.
The US Food and Drug Administration is aware of the ongoing recall.
