CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County high school juniors and seniors are invited to apply to be Teen Ambassadors, a program of Substance Abuse Free Environment, Inc., or SAFE, to serve as mentors to elementary-school-aged children both in school and in after-school settings.

Volunteers must be county residents who believe in, and live substance-free lifestyles.

The teen volunteers build relationships with children, while participating in activities that reinforce a substance-free lifestyle and helping with homework. Those selected will mentor a child one afternoon a week, for about one and a half hours, at Ettrick, Bellwood, Chalkley or Marguerite Christian elementary schools. Those who complete the program, which runs from October-December, will receive community service hours that may be included on applications for National Honor Society, service organization and colleges, or on resumes and employment applications.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21. An interview and one day of training are required. For more information, contact Sherry Callear, Teen Ambassadors coordinator, at callears@chesterfield.gov or call 804-717-6404.
