CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two people have been charged in connection to the May death of a dog at a Chesterfield Petco.
The Chesterfield County Police Department’s Animal Services Unit has completed its investigation of the incident, which happened at the Petco at 349 Perimeter Drive on May 29.
On May 31, police say a 2-year-old golden retriever, named Colby Jack, had reportedly died at the business two days earlier. The dog was dropped off at the business by its owner to be groomed and was later found dead in a drying cage.
After consultation with the Chesterfield County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, officers obtained summonses for animal neglect for 31-year-old Suzanne C. Jensen, and 28-year-old Rebecca L. Witherspoon. The charge is a class four misdemeanor.
Both Jensen and Witherspoon were employed by Petco at the time of the incident.
The summonses were obtained on Wednesday.

Allison Marks, Colby’s owner, said a veterinarian told her the dog died from a heat stroke. She sent 8News a statement after hearing the news about the charges.
“I am glad to see there will be justice for Colby’s death,” Marks said. “I am still extremely thankful for all the continuous support and prayers during this difficult time!”
Petco told 8News that no heat was used in Colby’s groom. They also said the employee involved in Colby’s death is no longer with the company. We’re not sure as of yet if the second person charged is still employed there.
