Weekend ushers in combined tax-exempt holidays in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia shoppers are enjoying a tax-free weekend for a wide array of merchandise.

From Friday through Sunday, shoppers will be spared local and state taxes for back-to-school supplies, energy efficiency products and emergency preparedness products. This is the first year all three tax-exempt holidays have been combined.

While tax-free products have various price limits, there is no restriction on how many exempt items consumers can purchase.

The tax exemptions extend to purchases of clothing, school supplies, flashlights and bottled water, portable generators and energy-saving household products such as dishwashers and air conditioners.

Retailers can also chose to pay the sales tax on any taxable items, passing the savings on to customers.
