RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — New information was made available Tuesda on the missing Richmond mom who’s body was discovered on Friday. Police now have a person of interest in the case.
Police say that Katasha Johnson’s boyfriend is now a person of interest but they are not calling him a suspect yet.
38-year-old David L. Rios was living with Johnson and her three children. According to her family they met at a local club he worked at and had not been dating long. Rios is currently behind bars, facing 3 counts of simple assault for something that happened at that home but police say it is unrelated to the murder and disappearance of Johnson.
Johnson went missing earlier this month. She dropped her one-year-old daughter off at daycare and never showed up to work. Her boss contacted police who then started looking for her at different locations throughout the city.
They stopped just short of where she was eventually found, an old junkyard just down the street from where she lived. A crew was clearing debris when the found a suspicious bag. They called police and when police cut the bag they found an arm and a leg sticking out. The medical examiner identified the remains as Katasha Johnson yesterday. Here’s what the chief had to say about why they are considering her boyfriend a person of interest.
“We’re investigating, information is coming in from the community and based on conversations that we have had with him,” said Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham. “He has been I guess I would use the words you would say cooperating with the lead investigator in this case. We have been having conversations but again the case is ongoing.”
Rios was arrested and is being held on unrelated charges of simple assault from earlier this month. The chief also talked about overall crime.
