FOX LAKE, Ill. (WRIC/WLS) — A manhunt is underway in Fox Lake, Illinois for three suspects after a police officer was fatally shot Tuesday.

Police said the men, described as two white males and one black male, should be considered armed and dangerous.

Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose says the officer was pursuing people described as suspicious around 7:52 a.m. Tuesday when he was shot and killed. He tells the Chicago Tribune that other responding officers found him in a marshy area in the city of Fox Lake and that he was stripped of his gun and other equipment.

“At this time, we’re asking all area residents to remain inside. Report any suspicious activity, any suspicious people, by dialing 911 as we still have three offenders at large,” a detective said to 8News affiliate WLS-TV.

Officers were seen searching a wooded area near the scene for several hours Tuesday morning. Canine units were brought in from several area jurisdictions.
