Remember bus safety on the first day back to school

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Parents, as you’re getting the kids ready for the school bus this morning, you might want to take a few minutes to make sure they know proper bus safety etiquette to keep them safe.

Vanessa Lande’s little girl is starting kindergarten this morning.

“That’s my biggest fear,” Lande said. “Putting her on a bus where she’s not supervised under my own eye.”

That’s why Lande and her daughter set out to learn bus basics weeks before school began — with some help from Henrico County Public Libraries and Henrico County school bus driver Justin James.

“She was the one who wanted to come.”

When the bus is coming, kids should be standing at three giant steps back from the curb. They should only approach the bus after it’s completely stopped. Students should board the bus one at a time.

“And no pushing or shoving so we can ensure that there are no incidents of falling,” James said.

Kids should never walk behind a bus and should only cross the street after the bus driver indicates that it’s safe. Students should always look both ways before crossing.

Now that Lande’s little girl has all the training, mom says it will go a long way to making the first day of school run smoothly.

“She’s been on it, she’s seen it and just makes her more comfortable.”
