RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The controversial arrest of UVa student Martese Johnson sparked outrage and calls for changes to ABC.
A lengthy state investigation into what happened, finding no wrong, has been kept under wraps leading to a letter from state senator Frank Wagner to the McAuliffe administration, demanding the report be released.
“We want to know what happened, we want to know if there’s going to be changes needed to ABC law enforcement or whether no changes are needed at all,” said Senator Wagner.
But the governor and his administration have consistently said the report is a personnel document and can’t be released without a waiver from the individuals involved in the report per state law.
“The state police, it is a personnel record, with confidential medical information, I cannot release it, but they have the right to do it if they want to release it, let them do it, send us a letter, we’d be glad to release it,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe.
“The taxpayers paid for this report, the taxpayers have a right to know what’s in the report, this is a national news item, and the public needs to know,” said Senator Wagner.
In a written response Wagner had this to say,
“The excuses offered by the McAuliffe administration are nonsense. This secrecy has to end. This is too important to the public’s perception of law enforcement in Virginia.”
Now the senator and Delegate Todd Gilbert say they plan to hold a joint hearing on ABC’s involvement in the Martese Johnson case. Wagner has criticized the governor, who created the integrity commission to help make government more transparent, of being inconsistent.
“Saying we want sunshine and then we say, ok show us the sunshine, and he chooses not to,” said Wagner.
Meanwhile Johnson’s attorney has also asked to see the ABC report but has yet to receive it.
