8News Daily Poll: Did you vote in Tuesday’s election?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC/AP) — Virginia Republicans have maintained control of the state Senate after a bruising, expensive contest that featured heavy investment from national special interest groups.

In a closely watched Richmond-area open seat, Republican Glen Sturtevant narrowly defeated Democrat Dan Gecker to hold a seat in Virginia’s 10th District Senate seat, which encompasses parts of Powhatan and Chesterfield counties as well as parts of Richmond.

Sturtevant garnered 49.78 percent (27,665) of the votes to Gecker’s 47.09 percent (26,171).

Republicans also held on to their 21-19 majority in Virginia’s House of Delegates, which has allowed them to beat back much of Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s legislative agenda.

All Republican House incumbents held off their liberal challengers Tuesday, and the GOP picked up a seat in northern Virginia that was left open when Democrat Michael Futrell chose to run for the state Senate. The GOP’s gain was canceled out by a Democratic win for another open seat in a closely watched northern Virginia race, and Democrats also celebrated other big victories, including an expensive contest in Williamsburg.
