Driver in pursuit that went through Cosby High parking lot facing charges

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An officer and suspect were transported to area hospitals after a police pursuit that ended near Cosby High School.

According to police, the pursuit began in Amelia County around 6:55 a.m. before crossing into Chesterfield County on Hull Street Road. A Chesterfield Police officer joined the chase. The suspect turned onto Fox Club Parkway and proceeded into the Cosby High School parking lot, where the driver went over a curb near an athletic field. Police were posted at the parking lot exits. The suspect struck an officer’s car when attempting to leave the parking lot.

The officer whose car was struck and the suspect, who was the only person in the suspect vehicle, were both transported to area hospitals for evaluation.

The driver of the vehicle, 32-year-old Derrick T. Edmonds, of Danville, has been charged with felony eluding and attempted capital murder of a police officer.

The principal of Cosby High School sent out a message to parents Wednesday morning, saying that police were involved in a pursuit through several counties including Chesterfield.

Our students and school are safe and there is no danger,” the message reads. “The driver of the vehicle being sought and police did drive through school property prior to students arriving. No students were involved and no students were hurt. Again, our students and staff are safe.”

Charges are pending and police are continuing to investigate.
