ASHBURN/HERNDON, Va. (WRIC) — Lottery officials say that more than 191,000 Powerball tickets sold in Virginia won prizes Wednesday, including two tickets that each won $50,000.

The two tickets that each won $50,000 in Wednesday night’s drawing were bought at:

  • Ashbrook Shell, 20065 Ashbrook Commons Plaza in Ashburn
  • 7-Eleven, 701 Van Buren Street in Herndon

Because no one matched the numbers drawn for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, the jackpot has climbed to an estimated $675 million — the largest jackpot of any lottery game in U.S. history.

The previous record was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot won in March 2012.

Virginia Lottery officials expect to sell about 2.7 million Powerball tickets in the Commonwealth on Saturday alone. At peak times on Saturday, the Virginia Lottery expects to sell 5,400 Powerball tickets per minute across Virginia.

If one ticket matches all six numbers, the winner will have a choice: either take the full $675 million jackpot in 30 annual payments, or choose a one-time cash option of approximately $413.1 million before taxes.

Powerball is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Remember 8News is the official Powerball station, and the only one in the area that will carry the live drawing at 10:59 p.m. Saturday!
