HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A Hopewell family was awakened by the noise of shattered glass Monday night. Joseph Quick told 8News someone threw a brick through his living room window because of what had prominently displayed, a Confederate flag.

“If you got problems — man up, female up and talk to me! That’s all I need. Don’t tear my truck up. Don’t tear my house up. Don’t put my wife and family in danger!” exclaimed Quick.

Quick wears Dixie symbols on his hat, his shirt and even his family vehicles have the symbols. The Hopewell man said he put the flag up in his window about one month ago to show his support to the Sons of the Confederacy.

“(At) 2:30, we were abruptly awakened by somebody throwing a brick through my front windows because of my support of the Sons of the Confederacy and my right to protest,” said Quick.

Fortunately no one was hurt by the brick, but Quick wondered what would have happened if members of his family happened to be in the living room when the brick was thrown.

“If that fell on you what would that do?” asked the Hopewell man. “ Let’s say if that hit my son, his girlfriend, or my grand-baby — that would kill them. I’m not here to kill nobody, I’m just expressing my freedom of speech,” said Quick.

Hopewell police told 8News they are investigating and the crime is classified as vandalism, which is misdemeanor.

In the meantime, Quick said what happened to his family won’t discourage him from putting his flag back up.

”Oh, this ain’t stopping me, window’s going in, it’s going up, flags are going on my truck it’s not going to stop me,” he said. “All this is doing every time someone burns one, tears one down it’s making people like me support the Sons of Confederacy and put our words out to keep the stars and bars flying.”
